The Paul Scherrer Institute PSI is the largest research institute for natural and engineering sciences within
Switzerland. We perform cutting-edge research in the fields of future technologies, energy and climate, health
innovation and fundamentals of nature. By performing fundamental and applied research, we work on sustainable solutions
for major challenges facing society, science and economy. PSI is committed to the training of future generations.
Therefore, about one quarter of our staff are post-docs, post-graduates or apprentices. Altogether, PSI employs 2300
people.
For the SwissFEL Bernina group, in the area of ultrafast condensed matter science, we are looking for a
Postdoctoral Fellow
Your tasks
You will explore coherent orbital excitation as a novel method to investigate and control quantum materials in the
time domain. Your tasks include setting up a novel source of circularly polarized THz pulses in our laser lab and
employ it at the Bernina beamline of SwissFEL. By combining ultrafast x-ray diffraction experiments with lab-based
studies, you will identify the induced magnetic and structural dynamics and their coupling. You will discuss and
present the scientific results at conferences and publish them in journals relevant to the field.
Your profile
We are looking for a motivated postdoctoral researcher with a PhD degree in physics or a related field and experience
in ultrafast spectroscopy, x-ray scattering techniques, or the study of quantum materials. Familiarity with laser
systems and THz radiation is a plus - we also welcome applicants who are eager to learn and grow in these areas. We
value collaborative team members who are open to interdisciplinary work and proactive in sharing and discussing ideas.
We offer
Our institution is based on an interdisciplinary, innovative and dynamic collaboration. You will profit from a
systematic training on the job, in addition to personal development possibilities and our pronounced vocational
training culture. If you wish to optimally combine work and family life or other personal interests, we are able to
support you with our modern employment conditions and the on-site infrastructure.
Your employment contract is limited to 2 Years with a possible extension to 3 Years.
For further information, please contact Roman Mankowsky, roman.mankowsky@psi.ch. Please submit your application online
by 03 August 2025 (including list of publications and addresses of referees) for the position as a Postdoctoral Fellow
(Index-Nr. 6316-00).
