PhD position in Computational Galaxy Formation 80 %
Start of employment by agreement, temporary
Applications are invited for a PhD position in Computational Galaxy Formation at the Department of Astrophysics. The
successful candidate will work with Prof. Feldmann to investigate the formation and evolution of galaxies using
state-of-the-art cosmological simulations.
The scientific computing infrastructure at the University of Zurich is excellent and includes dedicated access to the
top-notch facilities of the Swiss National Supercomputing Centre.
Your responsibilities
Potential research projects include: studying the properties of massive galaxies with and without feedback from
supermassive black holes, investigating the impact of different dark matter models on galaxy evolution, developing a
machine learning-based emulator for stellar feedback, and implementing baryonic processes relevant for galaxy formation
into an in-house high-performance code.
Your profile
A Master's degree (or equivalent) in physics, astronomy, or a related field is required for enrollment into the
doctoral program (see formal admission requirements). Individuals with a strong interest in numerical simulations, data
analysis, and galaxy evolution are especially encouraged to apply.
Information on your application
Application materials should include a CV, a letter of intent (no more than 2 pages), transcripts (undergraduate and
Master's), and the Master's thesis (or another scientific writing sample if the thesis is not yet available). The
submission of standardized test scores and English proficiency tests is optional. Applicants should provide at least
three names of academic personnel who would be willing to send reference letters upon request. All application
materials should be sent in one PDF file. The University of Zurich is an equal opportunity employer, committed to
fostering diversity. We strongly encourage applications from women and members of minority groups.
Review of applications will commence on March 3, 2025.
