Department of Quantitative Biomedicine
Lab Technician 80 - 100 %
Start of employment immediately
The Department of Quantitative Biomedicine combines biomedical research, with biotechnology, and computational biology
to develop the foundations of next generation precision medicine. Within this environment, we are a research group
aiming to understand the pathogenic mechanisms leading to two major neurodegenerative diseases: amyotrophic lateral
sclerosis (ALS) and frontotemporal dementia (FTD). Polymenidou Lab
Your responsibilities
We are looking for a technician to support our work with human stem cell cultures (iPSCs, NSCs), including iNets - our
unique model of human neural networks (Hruska-Plochan et al., Nature, 2024) - for studying human neurodegenerative
diseases. The work will include maintenance, expansion, and banking of existing and new iPSC and NSC lines.
Additionally, the tasks include the differentiation of stem cells into neural cultures and networks, their maintenance
and preparation for experiments. Ultimately, the candidate will learn to independently generate and characterize novel
disease and control stem cell lines. The role also includes lab administration and management tasks, such as ordering
supplies, managing inventory, and overseeing general lab organization.
This is a unique opportunity to join a young dynamic research group. The successful candidate will also gain
experience in modern cell biology techniques, while studying one of the most clinically relevant topics of today.
Importantly, the candidate will further contribute in the creation of an active and fruitful research atmosphere.
Your profile
Research technician diploma or Bachelor's/Master's in Biology/ Life sciences/ Biotechnologies/ Biochemistry. We are
looking for someone with excellent organizational skills, the ability to work independently and with a friendly,
helpful and open personality.
The successful candidate will have experience with molecular biology techniques and mammalian cell culture, including
human cell lines as well as neurons (rodent primary). Experience with human iPSCs and / or neurons is advantageous.
Additionally, experience with the following techniques would be an asset (but not required):
- Long term (months) cell culture
- Immunofluorescent staining (IF) of fixed cells
- Basic handling of light microscopes
- Basic cell and developmental biology knowledge
Proficiency in spoken and written English, as well as general knowledge of the office package and google docs are
