The IKMZ (Institute of Communication and Media Research) is a leading center for communication studies and research
with a strong international standing. At IKMZ, communication and media research is explored and taught in its full
breadth as a dynamic and constantly evolving discipline.
Your responsibilities
- Conduct collaborative research on links between news use, news avoidance, and political participation using
cross-sectional and longitudinal survey data, digital tracking methods, and automated text analysis.
- Present findings at conferences and publish in relevant academic journals.
- Successfully complete your PhD within the appointment period.
- Teach courses in the area of Political Communication at both BA and MA levels.
- Participate in organisational or administrative tasks as required.
Your profile
- Education: Master's degree in Communication Science, Political Science, Data Science, Digital Humanities, or a
closely related field. A certificate is required upon the commencement of employment.
- Research Skills: A strong background in quantitative research methods, with particular value placed on experience in
longitudinal survey analysis. Interest and experience in working with tracking data or text analysis is highly
desirable, as these methods are expected to be key components in the research program.
- Relevant Experience: Familiarity with research and public discourse related to news use, news avoidance, and
political participation. Candidates with a background in studying the relationship between media consumption patterns
and civic engagement, including topics like news avoidance, selective exposure to news or the impact of news on
electoral behaviour, are particularly encouraged to apply.
- Technical Proficiency: Proficiency in R is required.
- Language Proficiency: Proficiency in English is mandatory for research and publication. Basic knowledge of German
and additional language skills are desirable.
