The Paul Scherrer Institute PSI is the largest research institute for natural and engineering sciences within
Switzerland. We perform cutting-edge research in the fields of future technologies, energy and climate, health
innovation and fundamentals of nature. By performing fundamental and applied research, we work on sustainable solutions
for major challenges facing society, science and economy. PSI is committed to the training of future generations.
Therefore, about one quarter of our staff are post-docs, post-graduates or apprentices. Altogether, PSI employs 2300
people.
For many years the Laboratory for Waste Management has conducted multi-disciplinary research on safety and design of
geological repositories for radioactive wastes, using a unique combination of experimental infrastructure and modelling
capabilities. LES benefits strongly from on-site proximity to world-leading materials characterization facilities
including the SLS synchrotron and SINQ neutron source, radiochemical laboratories and high performance computing
facilities (HPC). Such studies have strong synergies with the field of environmental engineering, circular economy
including carbon capture and sequestration, and long-term performance of natural and engineered cementitious and
clay-based systems. The appointee will work closely with senior colleagues specialised in geochemical modelling of
repository in-situ conditions and design optimisation. They will collaborate with European and global partners in the
EURAD-II consortium (https://www.ejp-eurad.eu/), to conduct a world-class research program in development of high
fidelity numerical simulations of repositories design using physics based coupling and advanced machine learning
algorithm.
For our Geosphere Transport Group we are looking for a
Scientist
Your tasks
- High fidelity numerical simulations of coupled Thermo-Hydro-Chemo-Mechanical (THMC) processes in repository
nearfield, working towards the creation of a digital twin.
- Co-development of coupled codes and improvement of process coupling.
- Development of surrogate models using machine learning for the acceleration of numerical simulations to be used for
design optimization, uncertainty and sensitivity analysis.
- Publishing the results in peer reviewed research papers, and presentations to showcase the work conducted.
Your profile
We are looking for an expert in numerical simulations of coupled process with previous experience in at least one of
related field i.e. model development, machine learning, or use of HPC infrastructure. The candidate should have a fair
understanding of repository geochemistry and THMC-process couplings. Proficient programming skills (e.g., python,
C/C++, ...) and experience with the use of ML-tools (e.g., Tensorflow or Pytorch...). The successful candidate will
have a PhD or equivalent doctoral degree in Natural Sciences (Physics/Chemistry/GeoSciences/Engineering) or Applied
Mathematics.
We offer
Our institution is based on an interdisciplinary, innovative and dynamic collaboration. You will profit from
systematic training on the job, in addition to personal development possibilities and our pronounced vocational
training culture. If you wish to optimally combine work and family life or other personal interests, we are able to
support you with our modern employment conditions and the on-site infrastructure.
This is a Fixed-Term position with a 2 years employment contract. Further extension is possible depending on
performance and progress of the project.
For further information please contact Prof. Dr S. Churakov, phone +41 56 310 41 13 or Dr N. Prasianakis, +41 56 310
24 15.
Please submit your application online (including list of publications and addresses of referees) by 7 May 2025 for the
position as a scientist (index no. 4403-00).
