Die beiden ETH-Spinoffs wenden Verfahren an, die es möglich machen, CO\u003Csub>2&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fsub> aus der Luft abzuspalten und dieses mit Sonnenlicht und Wasser in ein synthetisches Gas zu überführen. Das Gas lässt sich danach zu Treibstoff weiterverarbeiten, der in normalen Motoren verbrannt werden kann.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>Klar: Auch bei der Verbrennung des synthetischen Treibstoff wird CO\u003Csub>2 \u003C\u002Fsub>freigesetzt. Da zuvor aber CO\u003Csub>2 \u003C\u002Fsub>aus der Luft abgetrennt wurde, weist das Verfahren eine neutrale Bilanz auf, es ist also klimaneutral.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>Auch wenn die Technologie bereits gut funktioniert, ist sie derzeit noch nicht in grossen Dimensionen im Einsatz. Die Preise für den synthetischen Treibstoff sind daher noch wesentlich höher als für normales Kerosin aus fossilem Rohöl.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Ch3>Flughafen Zürich und Lufthansa steigen ein\u003C\u002Fh3>\n\u003Cp>Um die Technologien weiter zu entwickeln und nachhaltiges Fliegen langfristig möglich zu machen, sind sowohl der Flughafen Zürich als auch die Lufthansa Kooperationen eingegangen. Der Flughafen Zürich hat sich zum Ziel gesetzt, bis ins Jahr 2040 emissionsfrei zu sein. Er hat sich daher entschieden, mit Synhelion eine Testanlage direkt auf dem Flughafengelände in Betrieb zu nehmen.
