Research technician/Lab manager at University of Zurich 100 %
Start of employment 01.02.2025, temporary
Our lab studies how genes and by extension cell fates are regulated, with the aim of controlling cell state
transitions in development and disease. For this we use a combination of mammalian cell culture models, high throughput
CRISPR screens, single cell genomics assays and computational approaches. See our website for more information on the
lab and our research (https://domcke.github.io/domcke-lab.html).
Your responsibilities
We are looking for a highly motivated person to play an active role in our research activities and take on a
long-term, leading role in organizing and ensuring the smooth functioning of the lab on multiple levels. You should
take an interest in the research going on around you and be enthusiastic about supporting lab members in different
phases of their research projects, from training to implementation. The diverse job responsibilities in a growing team
require a high level of independence, flexibility and sense of responsibility. Key areas of responsibilities will
include:
Research (70%):
- Mastering a range of molecular biology and especially cell culture techniques, such as stem cell culture,
differentiation of stem cells into diverse cell fates, transfection, generation of viral libraries, transduction,
cloning complex libraries, high throughput CRISPR genome editing screens, performing single cell genomics experiments
- Supporting lab members in various research projects, demonstrating both independence and ability to work in close
collaboration with a team
- Implementing new cell culture or genomics protocols, together with lab members
- Training new lab members in the core techniques of the lab
- Providing guidance on standard lab operating procedures and equipment
Lab administration and management (30%):
- Gathering and placing lab orders, managing inventory and monitoring expenditures
- Acting as a point of contact for communications with sales representatives
- Assisting with the onboarding of new team members
- Ensuring compliance of lab members with safety requirements and general good lab practices
- Managing a database for cell line and plasmid stocks
- Fostering a positive lab culture and collaborative environment
Your profile
Essential:
- A completed training as lab technician with several years of work experience or a university degree with additional
lab experience
- 3+ years experience with mammalian cell culture
- 3+ years experience with standard molecular biology techniques (cloning, PCR)
- Ability to plan and execute complex, large-scale experiments
- Ability to work proactively across a broad range of functions in a dynamic, international and interdisciplinary
environment
- Excellent organizational skills
- Conscientious documentation of lab protocols and results
- Solid English skills (written and spoken)
- Excellent interpersonal skills and an appreciation for working with and teaching other people
One or more of the following is beneficial:
- Experience with stem cell culture, differentiation protocols or organoid culture
- Experience with genome engineering
- Experience with single cell genomics assays
- Former qualifications and/or work experience in lab management are an advantage.
If you're excited about this role, but your experience doesn't align perfectly with every single qualification in the
job description, we still encourage you to apply.
What we offer
We offer the opportunity to perform cutting-edge research in a young, dynamic lab, where you will learn and utilize a
variety of modern techniques. As one of the first lab members, you will also have considerable influence in shaping the
organization and culture within the lab. We strive to offer a supportive, collaborative atmosphere where everyone has
the resources and support needed to reach their full potential. Accordingly, in addition to your duties, there will
also be some room for individual development, whether that is learning a new skill, leading a small research project or
proposing and implementing an improvement in lab organization or culture.

Please submit your application as a single PDF document that includes a letter of motivation, curriculum vitae, and
employer references or the names and addresses of at least three references.
