EPFL, the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne, is one of the most dynamic university campuses in Europe
and ranks among the top 20 universities worldwide. The EPFL employs more than 6,500 people supporting the three main
missions of the institutions: education, research and innovation. The EPFL campus offers an exceptional working
environment at the heart of a community of more than 18,500 people, including over 14,000 students and 4,000
researchers from more than 120 different countries.
Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Advanced Optical System Integration
Mission
Within the faculty of engineering (STI), the Galatea Laboratory explores novel paradigms to tailor material properties
locally using lasers. Our research involves three main clusters: understanding and exploring laser-matter interaction
phenomena, investigating new manufacturing processes based on 3D direct-write laser methods, and finally, exploring
novel concepts of multi-scale systems based on single monolith. The lab features state-of-the-art laser facilities and
infrastructure for pioneer research.
The Galatea Lab is located in the vibrant Neuchâtel’s campus of EPFL, part of Microcity, a ecosystem with a focused on
micro-technologies.
To strengthen our research program on optical systems integration, we are looking for a post-doc to investigate novel
concepts for advanced free-space optical systems embedded in single glass substrates. The work involves freeform
optomechanical principles and innovative laser-based processes applied to all-glass devices.
Main duties and responsibilities
- Define relevant research and experimental plans, sustained with theoretical considerations and knowledge of the
literature.
- Conduct experiments and analyze data.
- Report and disseminate the research outcome in journal publications and at conferences.
- Interact and collaborate with other lab members as well as with industrial partners.
- Occasionally supervise undergraduate students.
- Contribute to the laboratory operations through shared duties.
Profile
- You recently obtained a PhD in applied physics, micro-technologies or related fields with a strong knowledge of
optics.
- You have experience in optical design and related simulation tools, as well as hands-on experience with optical
setups involving lasers.
- You have a keen interest in research in the broad field of advanced manufacturing.
- You are independent, creative, solution-oriented, flexible and a team-player.
We offer
- Opportunity to contribute to a cutting-edge emerging research topic.
- Opportunity to work in an established multidisciplinary lab in ultrafast laser-matter interaction and advanced
manufacturing processes, as well as optomechanical designs.
- Opportunity to access state-of-the-art research facilities and laboratory resources.
- Opportunity to collaborate with world-leading research groups through international collaborations.
- Opportunity to interact with multidisciplinary projects with strong links to industry and spin-offs.
- EPFL is an international and top-ranking university. It offers a young, stimulating, dynamic, interdisciplinary, and
international working environment, a broad range of scientific training and networking events and hosts a vibrant
entrepreneurial community.
- EPFL is an equal-opportunity employer. Candidates will be recruited solely based on merit.
