assistant professorship with tenure track in medieval and post-medieval archaeology 100 %
Start of employment 1 August 2027, temporary
The University of Zurich invites applications for an assistant professorship in medieval and post-medieval archaeology
starting on 1 August 2027. After two temporary periods of employment of three years each, the position will become
tenured on the condition that the candidate passes an evaluation process.
Candidates are expected to have an outstanding academic record in teaching and research in medieval and post-medieval
archaeology. They must have a research focus in the field of medieval archaeology; experience in the field of
post-medieval archaeology would be desirable. Familiarity in the study of architecture and monuments is an asset. In
teaching, candidates are expected to cover the discipline in all its thematic and methodological breadth.
The professorship is expected to provide innovative research impulses while developing perspectives for the
archaeology of the Middle Ages and more recent periods. It will conduct field research and introduce digital
documentation and analysis methods into research and teaching. In addition to acquiring third-party funding, the
professorship is expected to engage in research and teaching collaborations with other professorships at a new,
yet-to-be established department at the University of Zurich, which will bring together archaeology, classical
philology and ancient studies. In addition, the professorship will foster collaboration with medieval disciplines at
the University of Zurich and with Swiss archaeological and architectural heritage conservation.
Candidates must hold a PhD degree at the time of application and have an excellent record of academic achievements in
the relevant field. Non-German speaking candidates are expected to acquire a working knowledge of German within the
first three years of their appointment. The University of Zurich and Zurich as a university location offer a
